Short Essay – Value of Sport … Sport has impacted and maintained our culture and identity. As a nation we value sport as it continues to contribute to the economy through employment and tourism. Sport helps to sustain the health and wellbeing of individuals and the population as a whole. Sport is essential in learning life skills such as leadership, friendship, teamwork, fairness, responsibility and respect. Socialization is a key part of sport as it is what builds a foundation for fans of future generations. Community development is crucial in determining the way individuals cooperate with one another. The Australian Football League (AFL) is a major part of the Australian culture. It would be beneficial to legitimize this sport, as it is advantageous to the nation. As a nation we value sport and the life skills we attain from being a part of it. Most children play sports or are involved in sports from a young age and gain many skills, skills that are necessary for the way they react with other member of the community in the future. Teamwork is the main skill in which individuals learn. Having this skill will be valuable in the future, at school and in their career. Being able to work with others, means being able to be social and part of a community. AFL is a homegrown sport created and founded in 1858 by Tom Wills and his cousins H.C.A. Harrison, W.J. Hammersley and J.B. Thompson. The first team was Melbourne Football Club. Since then, many teams have been added and the rules have been changed to make it into the game we watch today. AFL was based only in victoria and only consisted of Victorian teams until 1987 when the game expanded to other states. The game has also spread internationally and is played in over 13 countries.
