Alejandro Garcia Rhodes English 201 12 June 2009 Will the HPV vaccine save or kill lives Opponents and proponents of mandatory vaccinations have a huge dilemma. On one hand, Gardasil, a new Merck drug may prevent the human papilloma virus (HPV), from infecting millions of women worldwide. On the other hand, others are skeptical of administering the vaccine at all. Several bills have been introduced which would of informed parents about the HPV vaccine, and require them to vaccinate their daughters before entering middle school. The new Merck drug, Gardasil, should not be mandated by the federal government because it is a violation of parental rights and fast tracking a new vaccine could prove to be disastorous.
So what happens to the people that didn’t think it was a big deal to get the shot, or just flat out didn’t want it? The H1N1 vaccination is an experimental vaccination that is still being tested even today. Many don’t even know all of the side effects of the vaccination and what it might do to you in the short term or even the long term. In an article on Organic Consumers Association website they wrote, “Beyond the reasons any vaccine is risky, this one has special risk factors. First, it will not undergo the usual safety testing prior to being made available.
The consequences of the paper was that the papers ignored the fact there was no real proof of a link, which was stated in the paper, and that some parents decided to not give there children the vaccine. 7. Autism and bowel disease were the problems that were could be linked to the MMR vaccine but there is no proof. 8. If I were a parent I would give my child the vaccine, because I don’t want my child being affected by these diseases.
To Vaccinate or Not to Vaccinate Vaccinations are given to people to prevent diseases and other illnesses. Times have progressed to children given the vaccinations as well; however, more and more parents aren’t allowing for it to happen. From a parent’s perspective, it can be interpreted that they fear ‘fatal side effects’. On the other hand, I feel that there is not much of a risk towards the vaccinations; children should get their vaccinations in order to save them. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (ProCons.org, 2015 Page 1), most childhood vaccines are 90%-99% effecting in preventing diseases; at least 2.5 million children are saved every year.
How important for the prevention of disease was Edward Jenner’s discovery of the smallpox vaccination in 1796? Edward Jenner took the first step in understanding and preventing infectious diseases by developing a smallpox vaccination in the year 1796. This was important as he saved many lives with this new discovery and improved previous methods of preventing disease. Future scientists such as Pasteur and Koch were also able to use Jenner’s work to develop vaccinations for other serious illnesses. However, it was also a limited discovery because it merely tackled one disease and his idea was only gradually accepted by other doctors.

Vaccines protect us from viruses and diseases like small pox and polio that use to kill thousands of people. We have been using vaccines since 1796 to control these diseases and for many years they have stayed pretty dormant. Recently, some of those that we thought were almost extinct are starting to reappear and this is due to parents not keeping up with their children’s vaccination schedule. Keeping up with the yearly recommended schedule and making sure your child’s vaccinations are up to date is key to preventing these diseases from reappearing. For the most part there have been little changes in the schedule over the past couple of years, but there were a couple of changes made from last year that people need to be informed of.
So why are more and more people worried about vaccines, especially the ones for kids? Vaccines prevent disease. It is always better to prevent disease rather than treat it- better to never get it in the first place. Vaccines prevent death. Vaccines are responsible for the control (if not eradication) of many diseases which were once common, like polio, measles, diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), rubella (German measles), mumps, and tetanus.
Kora Wilke Bever Debate 6 November Eugenics is a science that deals with the improvement of heredity qualities. This should be legal because American parents should be able to prevent disabilities in their children. A disability is being deprived of physical, moral or intellectual strength. Eugenics would create a fair and average play field, eliminating disabilities that could be a burden on one’s health—even life. With eugenics legal, Americans would have more room to prosper, reducing the price of medical help in the long run.
Worrying about a child’s weight is just a form of vanity. Fact: While is true that being overweight affects appearance, problems go deeper. It’s not just vanity. Being a good parent is taking care of our children’s health. Asking your pediatrician is a good idea when you don’t know if your child is overweight or not so there are no problems in the future.
