Shostakovich uses a variety of techniques to portray sorrow. This is immediately established by the largo tempo and the and the Fsharp minor scale played in the 3rd violin, with the b2. He also introduces a 3rd violin, 2nd Viola and 2nd Cello. This allows Shostakovich to create a very ethereal sound, as from RM75 to RM79 is purely strings, which also allows a very dense texture and more material for contrapuntal techniques.

A moment of intensity is portrayed by the extreme dissonance played at RM77, emphasised by the diminuendo shortly followed by a crescendo, which soon resolves to a . The first violin enters at RM 78 and sequences a melody upwards, which is followed by a solo harp playing a rising Gb arpeggio, which could symbolise souls rising upwards towards heaven, due to the angelic nature of the harp. This is immediately followed by the introduction of the flute at RM79, playing an adapted version of figure 1 from the first movement. This is accompanied by only the harp, playing Cb and Bb octaves, adding a very spiritual feel.

More impact is demonstrated at RM83-4, where there has been a big build up featuring an 8 bar pedal note roll from the timpani, and upwards motion in each instrument until a crescendo to ff and a largamente expression brings back the dissonance heard earlier. RM83 features the lower strings in octaves as they end with a mordendo effect and the 1st violin plays with a tremelando technique. This readies us for the solo melody in the Oboe at RM84+2, which has a very lonely effect, and introduces a tragic sound to the piece.
