Essay title: Using Derivative to Enrich Students’ Vocabulary
Ability to master an amount of language vocabulary is one of criteria to master that language. Nevertheless, there is so much vocabulary in English. There are many techniques to master English vocabulary. One of the techniques a student can used to enrich his vocabulary is using derivative/ derivation. Derivation is a linguistic term which refers to a process of word formation. By means of certain suffixes and prefixes (-able, -ment, pre-, en-, etc.), our language is able to make new words from existing ones. (Stevens et. al., 1966: 128). Therefore, having the ability to make new words can enrich the students’ vocabulary.

M. DWI HARDANI, S.Pd. is an English teacher of SMP Negeri 4 Mendo Barat of Bangka Regency Bangka Belitung Province. Besides teaching at SMP 4, he is also an instructor of Selective English Course Bangka Belitung, dealing mostly with English for Specific Purposes classes. He graduated from English Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education Ahmad Dahlan University Yogyakarta in 2007.
