1. “Has she had a sore throat? Both parents answered me together, No…No, she says her throat don’t hurt her. Does your throat hurt you? added the mother to the child. But the little girl’s expression didn’t change nor did she move her eyes from my face”(1553). This piece from the short story complies with the theme because by the expression and fear that the little girl possesses over the question about her throat being sore, it identifies that she is wanting to hide the fact that her throat is really in pain. The reason that she wants to hide it is because she knows the tragedies that it has caused in many other children, and she does not want to bring that kind of burden on her parents. Therefore, she is selfish by keeping her sickness to herself although it is out of good reasoning. 2. “She had been hiding that sore throat for three days at least and lying to her parents in order to escape just an outcome as this. Now truly she was furious. She had been on the defensive before but now she attacked. Tried to get off her father’s lap and fly at me while tears of defeat blinded her eyes”(1555). I think that this piece of writing has a lot to do with the theme because it shows that she was hiding her disease to not only protect herself, her parents as well. Even though she was trying to do good by not wanting to upset her parents and letting know that she was really in pain, in the end she was only hurting herself. This also shows that she was deep down being selfish because she knew that she would not be able to accept the fact that she was sick. By the doctor forcing her to expose her disease, what she knew deep down was the truth became the reality. 3. “But I have seen at least two children lying dead in bed of neglect in such cases, and feeling that I must get a diagnosis now or never I went at it again”(1555).
