Carjacking is the unlawful form of hijacking, where the crime is the stealing of a motor vehicle and possibly also armed assault when the vehicle is occupied. Historically, in my humble opinion I think the hijackers believe they are above the law at present as car jacking has mostly been a US base phenomenon and the judicial system here is struggling to catch up with the upsurge in the problem. Yes in the UK we’ve always had hijackings since the days of Dick Turpin, and these have moved on with the times but have been usually focused on heavy goods vehicles for their products such as in the rash of semi-trailer truck hijackings during the 1960s, the general term hijacking was used for that type of vehicle abduction, which did not often include kidnapping of the driver, and concentrated on the theft of the load, rather than the vehicle itself. With the passage of time we could also look at the avenue of the growth of the computer game industry with games such as Grand Theft Auto, which encourage the player to steal car and kill players to become the best within the game, however the hijackers cannot distinguish right from wrong and game and reality. So this has could have lead to the increase, during night time car theft crime has typically, meant the carjacker is armed, and the driver is forced out of the car with the threat of bodily injury. The crime is extremely hazardous, threatening the physical safety of both the carjacker and the victim. To secure the car, the carjacker may sometimes shoot the victim or physically push/pull the victim out of the driver's seat to force him or her out of the car. Then the public is put at risk by the speeding, reckless and generally unsafe driving of the carjacker. The carjacker typically intends to use the stolen vehicle in another crime.
