Sarah Dow 5-21-12 Period 3 Essay for Until They Bring the Streetcars Back “I peered into the room and when my eyes got used to the darkness I could make out her form curled under the covers. I listened until I heard her breathing” (87). Quoted by the protagonist, Cal Gant, from Stanley Gordon West’s novel, Until They Bring the Streetcars Back is a very meaningful and loving statement. He is showing his love and sympathy to Cal’s sister, Peggy, through this quote. Cal expresses it in such a way that it so meaningful to the characters in the story, society itself, and the viewers. In, Until They Bring the Streetcars Back, the characters find themselves discovering the soft side of Cal Gant that they would have never thought they would have found. Some of the characters that acknowledge it were Gretchen, Peggy, Spence, and Sergeant Riley. Gretchen was always repressing him back because she knew after awhile that he was nice and innocent. Peggy, as his little sister, knew him very well but could always tell when he rapidly would grow up to be a good guy. Peggy noticed change in him throughout the story that not many characters realized. She noticed that he was ready to be an adult because of his strong actions and kind behavior. Sergeant Riley didn’t really know Cal all too well but had a sense of him as the story came to an end. The characters respected Cal because he was always respectful to them back. In society, believing that people should be kind and helpful to the ones in need is a very important part of life. Society relies on the kind of people such as Cal to make the world a caring and loving place. Even though Cal makes many foolish mistakes in the story, it can relate to the stuff people do on a daily bases and make up for their flubs.
