Instead of just using the word women, she uses “we” because she wants the reader to feel that she and the audience is a part of this statistic too. I think Kamenetz is trying to reach a very broad audience, rather than target any certain audience. She, in a way, is targeting men of all ages. I think that showing men that people are equal regardless of sex is the most important in this case, and she realizes this as well. She does a great job of relating to all audiences, to see her possible solution to the rising issues occurring.
I believe if Teddy’s had its policy communicated more clearly to its employees, Virginia Pollard would not have been harassed and man would not put her in such a situation as they would know what the potential consequences could be. 4. I do not think that Pollard’s case would have been different if her replacement has been a female. Virginia Pollard was a victim of discrimination and sexual harassment and that is what has already happened. If her replacement was a female Teddy’s could use that to show that they are not discriminating towards whom they are hiring and the policy is in the effect.
Whereas the first two authors both preach for equal women’s rights and for better treatment for women this author, Catharine Beecher, is more discreet about woman’s rights. According to Beecher, women should have equal privileges as men in social and civil concerns, but in order to keep these privileges women stay stagnant and hand over the civil and political decisions to men. She suggests this because women throughout their life are taught
In The Right to Tell the Truth, written by Ann Marie B. Bahr, she states, “I did not know about David Horowitz’s “academic bill of rights”…but even if I had, I would have not thought that I had anything to fear from it” (Bahr). Staff members have been afraid of going too far with their personal political opinion because of the Academic Bill of Rights, which Bahr states she would not ever think would give her fear, but however it did. Being kept from showing personal and real interest on an opinion is like being trapped inside of a box. A professor should be able to express a statement about politics for various reasons such as it will help get a better understanding about a certain topic, or the matter of politics would not have came up in the first place. Although Bahr does talk about political points of views, she doesn’t say everything that needs to be said and doesn’t get to into it, because of the feeling that it isn’t allowed.
The philosophical basis of liberal feminism lies in the principle of individualism. Individuals are entitled to equal treatment regardless of sex and so any form of discrimination against women should be prohibited. Liberal feminists also do not wish to abolish the distinction between the public and private spheres and accept that women’s leaning towards family and domestic life is influenced by natural impulses and so reflects a willing choice. The focus in liberal feminism therefore seems to be more on the liberal aspect than the feminist as they see no need to push for the sexless personhood goal of feminism but prefer the equality principle of liberalism. This means
He compared philosophers to someone who had been set free, and could see the truth (Plato 455). Because taking up office would be a necessity and not a privilege, there would be no one taking up office to further their personal ambitions. There would also be no competition for office, so there would be no reason to lie to people for votes or support. There would also be no pressure put on politicians to do what the public wants, since they wouldn’t have to worry about being
Worse, is that they ignore their responsibility to the tribe that has contributed so much to their science curriculum. This could possibly taint any future studies if the university earns a reputation of not honoring commitments to its subjects. In light of the circumstances surrounding this case, there are few options besides student involvement. Without the university population taking up the case, there could be a perpetual stalemate between the university and the tribe. It falls to the students to protect the guiding principles of the university and ensure it is being held ethically
Women are now accepted into traditionally labeled male occupations, and men are being more accepted in traditional female roles. Although we do strive for equability, males are still expected to be dominate in most social structures, leading to the oppression of women in some ways. A male’s traditional role is to be the strength for him and his family. Females are no longer staying at home mothers but employed mothers, providing for their family with long lasting careers or jobs. Our women have fought for a difference in treatment, which differs from the Amish women who didn't question the role that they played in their
All students have equal rights, but they do not get the chance. Those cases become exemplars of why people immigrate to United
The right to vote is a civil right, not a civic duty. The people have the option to use their civil rights, such as free speech and marriage, but there is no law saying that they must. Having this mandatory voting law could be seen as interfering with a basic right. Voting is one of the many great rights that Americans have; it should not be turned into an obligation. A democracy is supposed to be a government based on respecting basic human rights, which includes free choices.
