Health care is a basic human need and an effective health care system is crucial for the population to thrive and for the economy to grow. With the different financing options available, governments are able to provide universal health care and still maintain other health care options, both public and private. Thirty-two out of the thirty-three nations are now using universal health care for their population, with the United States being the exception. Even though arguing politics makes the process complicated, United States should provide universal health coverage for its populace because many cannot afford basic health care and do not seek out medical attention right away, decrease the medical debt in the United States, and decrease the amount of poverty.
Sixty percent American citizens typically get their health insurance through an employer, however a percentage of the population either purchase their insurance from providers directly or get medical insurance through a government agency. Private health insurance is purchased through employers, trade or industry groups, or unions and sometimes purchased on an individual basis. Private insurance costs usually vary by group or individual needs, and are influenced by numerous factors such as age, region, and on occasion, ethnicity. Private insurance companies provide different plans that are available based on the individuals need, or what is provided and requested through the employer. Private purchased plans often have a high deductible, copayment and premium fee. Government health insurance plans cover approximately twenty seven percent of the population. The most common government medical programs are Medicare, where health care insurance is provided through the federal government for adults of 65 years of age or older or certain adults with specific long term disabilities who are under 65 years of age.
