There was numerous times where other activities that Hazel participated in were mentioned throughout “Raymond’s Run.” In example she talks about a spelling bee and piano lessons that are endured by other peers that she knew. Well she discovers if she is able to identify her own individuality then she can pursue new interest like the spelling bee and the piano she envies so much. The reason for her jealousy is because she is currently not good at either activity. With her pushing aside running track, which she has already been successful in, she would be able to reach new heights in new activities and succeed further overall. Parents also give their children gender-specific toys. Common toys for boys are action figures, toy cars, and balls. Girls are frequently given dolls, tea sets, and stuffed animals. Even how children are treated is based on the child’s sex. Mothers are often stern with their daughters and easy on their sons.
Toy makers also started to make toys smaller. All kids want to bring their new toys wherever they go. If the toys are large and not easy to bring places, parents are not going to let their kids bring the toy with them and their kids will be extremely upset. Therefore, the toy makers made toys more convenient for everyone. Parents will allow their kids to take smaller toys
Or I would sit in front of the television and play with my Barbies. When playing with my Barbies I was able to do anything and everything with them, I sent them on “dates” with my brother’s GI Joes or they would have “sleepovers” and “have swim parties”. There many of things for me to do with them. Some parents may see that as a negative effect, my parents didn’t mind that I played with them so much, it was more of a hobby for me. Permissive Parents tend to be more responsive to their children’s needs than demanding. Permissive Parents regularly consult with their children, give lots of explanations for their decisions, and allow their children to basically decide their own behaviors. Although close to their children, they make few demands on them for conformity, orderly behaviors, or chores. This is the parent who lets a preschooler strew toys all over the living room and leave them there. This is the parent who lets adolescent children leave the house without knowing where they are going, who asks where they went when they return but without much comment, and who involves their children in all family decisions.
It has become very convenient for families to set up an office in their homes, in some instances parents have had to schedule a “mommy is working now” time or complete work after post bed time (English-Lueck 1998). Families are using technology to interact with other members to arrange pick up and drop offs for school activities, weddings, and for discovering infidelities with their spouses. Families are depending more on technology as times goes by. Parents are becoming more co-dependent with parental discipline through electronics with their children. The more time we spend using advance technology on a daily basis we seem to be having less and less interactions with each other.
While boys are encouraged to be adventurous and granted freedom that is perhaps undeserved, their female counterparts will be given toy ovens and princess dolls to play with. Well meaning adults will often correct or shame a child who exhibits behaviors that are not suitable for the gender roles Ornelas 2 they are being raised to fill. The way children are spoken to, played with, touched, etc. I think the expectations from society influence the way parents raise their children. Growing up, children are completely stereotyped. For example, boys are thought to mostly play with toy trucks/cars, action figures, and tools and girls are thought to mostly play with Barbie dolls, makeup, and kitchen sets. Mainly because that stereotypical societal behavior is encouraged through advertisements on a daily basis.
