Allen Roy NT1210 10 28 2013 Unit 6 Assignment 1: Wireless LAN key terms Coverage area: The space in which the radio waves in one WLAN that can effectively reach and be used to send and receive data. Shared Bandwidth: A term referring to how some WLANs must share the right to send data by taking turns, which limits the bit rate by all devices. Wi-Fi: A term created by the Wi-Fi alliance as part of its overall WLAN branding and marketing strategy. LAN edge: A ref to the part of the campus LAN with the end user devices and the switches to which they connect through the Ethernet switch or a WLAN AP that contains the largest number of phy links. WLAN Hotspot: Free Wi Fi usually offered by a business at no cost to patrons. Basic Service Set: WLAN a single wireless AP and the client’s devices that send data to/from that AP. Extended Service Set: A WLAN that has at least two AP but access is through on AP at a time. Unlicensed Frequency band: A set of consecutive frequency bands reserved by national regulators like the FCC allowing anyone’s devices to use the frequencies although all must follow certain rules like limiting power. Nonoverlapping channels: in WLANs, channels freq ranges used for sending data which the freq do not over lap in turn allowing several devices to to send and receive data at the same time. Management and control frames: 802.11 frames defined for some overhead function in 802.11 instead of being data frames which carry upper layer
