Unit 6 Assignment 1: The Aging Musculoskeletal System Tierra Montgomery ITT Technical Institute AP2530: Human Anatomy and Physiology I August 5, 2014 Unit 6 Assignment 1: The Aging Musculoskeletal System Osteoporosis is a disorder in which the bones become increasingly brittle due to the loss of calcium and other mineral components. “The leading cause of osteoporosis is a lack of certain hormones, particularly estrogen in women and androgen in men” (Osteoporosis, 2014). Other known causes of osteoporosis are aging, cigarette smoking, and cancer treatments. Degenerative joint disease, or osteoarthritis, is the chronic breakdown of cartilage in the joints leading to pain, stiffness, and swelling. “While the exact cause of OA is unknown, joint damage can be due to repetitive movement” (What is Osteoarthritis?). Some of the risk factors of osteoarthritis include: age, gender, obesity, heredity, and joint injury. Muscle atrophy, or muscle wasting, results from loss of muscle tissue. “Causes include a sedentary lifestyle, being bedridden, injuries, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis (chronic autoimmune disease characterized by joint inflammation).
