Coronary Artery Disease Ashley Young HS 200, section 4 Unit 4 Capstone Project: Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) Kaplan University 7/6/2014 Coronary artery disease is the number one killer in America. Coronary artery disease, also known as CAD has affected 13 million Americans. Normal cardiovascular arteries are smooth and elastic. When coronary artery disease develops the arteries become damaged and diseased making the arteries narrow and ridged. Damaged and diseased arteries restricts the normal amount of blood flow. Coronary artery disease can also be called coronary heart disease (CHD). Chest pain can include heaviness, pressure, tightness, aching, burning, numbness and fullness. Sometimes chest pain can be mistaken for indigestion or heart burn. Angina can be felt in the chest, shoulders, left arm, neck back and jaw. Physical and emotional stress can also cause chest pain. Once the emotional stress goes away and your body is calmed down after physical stress, the chest pains will usually go away within minutes. Shortness of breath usually occurs when your heart can not pump the necessary amount of blood throughout your body. Heart attacks occur when the artery is completely blocked with plaque. Heart attacks can be silent meaning it could happen without any signs at all. A heart attack usually comes with pain or pressure in the chest, shoulder or arm. Shortness of breath and sweating can also occur during a heart attack. If you think you are having a heart attack be sure to call emergency responders as soon as possible. Waiting to too long for help will cause more damage to your cardiovascular
