Unit 39 Infection prevention & Control P1, 2) Explain how infections are caused by different pathogens and how pathogenic micro-organisms grow and spread. Infections are always in the air, no matter how hard people try to prevent infections they will catch them. Infections can be caused by different pathogens such as touching someone or something, being in the same room as someone sneezing or coughing, it can ever be caused through stroking a pet. Pathogenic infections can grow and spread into disease which consists of bacteria, viruses and fungi. This can happen in a care home easily, as older people are very fragile and prone to infections. In a care home infections can be spread by staff not wearing gloves and aprons, which can lead to cross contamination. Another way infection could spread is by a resident having the flu and being put in the same room as the other residents, this could cause the rest of the care home becoming ill. Infection can be brought to a residential care home from an outsider such as a family member. If they are to have an infection it could still be in the air for days, for other people to catch it. They have to always be aware of and report changes in the health conditions of the individuals that they support. They also have a responsibility to assist with keeping work areas, and equipment clean, tidy and free from infection hazards. They are also encouraged to maintain good personal hygiene for themselves as well as their service users. For example, helping service users bathe, use the toilet and change remove and dispose of any soiled clothing.
