Health and safety policies and procedures protect those in social care settings by having an agreed understanding of ways of working within the company how these policies and procedures protect individuals is by reducing crucial risks and has measures in place for hazards.
They are also responsible for any visitors to their premises such as customers, suppliers and the general public. The employer is also responsible for providing PPE , and training for employees. 2. Under this Act, the workers have responsibilities to ensure safety is there in the workplace. The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 covers all manual handling actions, such as lifting, carrying objects or pulling. Other regulations are Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 and this cover requirements for the provision of first aid in the workplace. Jayne Partington Contribute to health and safety in health and social care 1.1&1.3 The Health and safety at Work Act 1974 (HSWA) promotes health and safety in my workplace by ensuring my employers create a safe environment and eliminate any risks, provide training, information and supervisions. My role is to ensure the safety of myself and others around me; I am to act or report incidences that may be a risk. This may include putting things away or back in a safe way, keeping poisons in a locked cupboard, sealing off wet floors until cleaned, reporting broken furniture or equipment. The role of others in the workplace is to be aware of their own safety and to report any incidences of risk immediately. Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002(COSHH) In the workplace there are many substances hazardous to health and it’s important that carers are aware of these and have training in how to use, store and dispose of poisons/substances.
COSHH – The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002. The regulations are in place to ensure that the general requirement of an employer is to protect employees and other persons from the hazards of substances used at work by risk assessment, control of exposure, health surveillance and incident planning. COSHH requires settings to label all of hazardous substances clearly and ensure that they are stored correctly and out of harm’s way. Care providers must protect staff and service users from harm by ensuring that potentially dangerous substances are safely stored and that staff that use them are properly trained to do so. Every piece of legislation describes not only clear guidance of responsibilities but also how we should maintain health and safety to eliminate risks for the people who use care settings. For example, Food Hygiene Regulations 2005 explains the responsibilities whilst handling food to avoid contamination and food poisoning which protects the people who use care settings. Another example is from COSHH which explains the responsibilities involving handling hazardous substances such as reducing using hazardous substances which will reduce exposure level as much as possible. Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 states that employers must provide manual handling training and maintain any equipment used for manual handling tasks therefore protecting staff as following the correct procedures will eliminate any risks of injury.
