Principles of diversity, equality and inclusion in adult social care settings Unit 303 Outcome 1 Understand the importance of diversity, equality and inclusion 1.1 Explain what is meant by: * Diversity- Understanding that every individual is unique and recognising individual differences. For example race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, etc. * Equality- Fair treatment and access to opportunities for every individual in spite difference in their, culture, race, religion, ability, gender, sexuality or any other characteristic. * Inclusion- Accepting and involving everyone regardless of age, gender, race, sexuality etc. Recognising we are all equal, although we are not the same and have a sense of belonging. 1.2 Describe the potential effects of discrimination. The potential effects of discrimination can have an emotion or physical effect or a person, sometimes both. For example a person being mistreated at work because of their race, the effect this could cause are stress, low self-esteem, anger, weight loss/gain, depression, low self worth, fear, withdrawn from society, loss of motivation etc. 1.3 Explain the importance of inclusive practice in promoting equality and supporting diversity. The importance of inclusive in promoting equality and supporting diversity, are by making sure there are no barrier stopping people from being included because of disability, race, age, sexuality, religion, gender etc. Providing the support that people need to live their life as fully as possible. Outcome 2 Understand how to work in an inclusive way 2.1 Describe key legislation and codes of practice relating to diversity, equality, inclusion and discrimination in adult social care settings.
