Outcome 1 understand why effective communication is important in the work setting 1. There are a variety of reasons why people communicate in work settings. Such as to build relationships, to gain and share information, to express needs and feelings. A smile, wave of a hand or a simple hello may be the first burst of communication towards building a relationship. An important point to remember when thinking about effective communication is that not all people’s experiences will be the same as your own due to their upbringing, culture, family background or linguistic knowledge. This means that you cannot always take for granted that your viewpoint or style of communication will always be affective. Culture and family background affects the way people communicate as something that might be acceptable to us may not be acceptable in some cultures like direct eye contact. Family background plays a big part in how we communicate amongst our family. Some children will have heard swearing at home others may be hearing more than one language also some may come from a noisy household where as other may come from a more quiet environment. These aspects of their family background will affect the way in which they will communicate as adults. People’s personalities can affect the way in which they communicate. Some can be really outgoing while others are more reserved and simply don’t enjoy being in a group or communicating with unfamiliar people. Confidence and self-esteem are important factors when people communicate, e.g. a child who is made fun of because of something they wrote incorrectly would probably avoid writing as an adult where as a child who is encouraged and praised may become a confident…show more content…
Confidentiality means not passing on information about a person or organisation or situation to anyone who does not have the right or need to know. It is about respecting other people’s privacy and keeping safe the information that they have provided. It is also about trust as we want parents, carers, children and other professionals to share information with us. Sometimes the information shared is not intended to be shared around, it maybe of a personal nature or simply not relevant to other people. This information is called ‘confidential’ and as professionals we are expected to recognise this. Most settings have confidentiality policies and you must read and follow it. In IFCS policy you must never pass on information to the media that would lead to the identity of a child or young person in foster care or any information on the family. Passing confidential information regarding children or carers family would result in instant dismissal. The importance of confidentiality is taken so seriously that there is legislation in place that covers all information stored. This is ‘the data protection act 1998’. The keeping of records, storing of data and passing of information is strictly regulated by the Data Protection Act 1998, the act covers both paper based and electronic records.
