Unit 30 Digital Graphics A computer system needs certain hardware components and peripherals to function effectively. These can affect the computer’s performance and can increase the quality of graphical images. RAM - RAM is a type of internal data storage. Any software, operating systems or data that is currently in use will be stored here. The more RAM a computer has, the greater the overall performance. Think of RAM as a human memory, the more things it can remember at once, the more things it can process quickly at the same time. In terms of enhancing graphical images, having more RAM would mean you could open larger file sizes into the software, whilst still running the program at a high, constant speed. Having 2gb of RAM would limit you to only being able to have up to 2gb of access memory. Adobe Photoshop requires at least 2gb to just run, so having anything else open at all would result in your computer running at extremely slow speeds or even crashing. If your computer had 4gb or even 8gb then you could have Photoshop open as well as other programs and still have your computer running at a fast speed. Processor - The CPU or Central Processing Unit is the brain of the computer. Any calculations or processes all take place here. In terms of computing power, the CPU is the most important of all the other components. Most people own a small personal computer; the processors in these are contained in a small chip called a microprocessor. Larger computers however require at least two printed circuit boards. The entire processor is about half the size of an average human finger. On the underside of the unit are lots of metallic pins, the unit is inserted into the CPU socket where the pins will come into contact with the motherboard. There are two main components of a CPU unit; the arithmetic logic unit, and the control unit. The arithmetic logic unit perform
