Explain what is meant by: Diversity Diversity means difference. Diversity also means that though people have things in common with each other, they are also different in many ways. Diversity is about recognising and valuing those differences, and consists of visible and non-visible factors, which include personal characteristics such as background, culture, personality in addition to the characteristics that are protected under discrimination legislation such as race, disability, gender, religion and belief, sexual preferences and age. Equality Equality is about creating a fairer society, where everyone can take part and has the opportunity to fulfil their potential. Equality means being equal in status, rights and opportunities no matter what their race disability, gender, religion, beliefs and cultural differences, sexual preferences or age. Inclusion Inclusion is a sense of belonging, feeling included, feeling respected, valued for who you are even if you are lacking in some mental or physical capacity. Inclusion ensures everyone has access to resources, rights, goods and services, and is able to participate in activities. Discrimination Discrimination is when a person is treated less favourably or you receive a worse service than others because of your age, gender, race, sexuality, or ability. In care, treating everyone the same can be discriminatory because some people will have their needs met and others will not. 2. Describe ways in which discrimination may deliberately or inadvertently occur in the work setting Discrimination can take place intentionally and also unintentionally.
