Pelican Bay State Prison: War Zone Marquette Steffke CJA/314 August 27, 2015 Gary Howard Pelican Bay State Prison: War Zone Pelican Bay State Prison is well known for an intriguing reputation. The reputation is withheld through gang leaders whom desire to enter the doors and dominate others while gaining an even better reputation for themselves. The prisoners within Pelican Bay commonly set a goal to gain entrance to this prison because it is more like a reward than a punishment. Gang leaders and members gain more strength and skill upon admission. This prison represents the theory of social structure due to the environment the criminals enter allowing them to continue down a negative path.
According to UK law, a duty of care applies to all people you come into contact with, but it is of particular significance where children, young people and adults that require safeguarding are concerned, because they are unable to meet their own needs or may be aware of potential danger. Health and social care organisations have what is called a duty of care towards the people they look after. That means that they must do everything they can to keep the people in their care safe from harm. It is not only the care establishment that needs to prioritise the safety, welfare and interests of the people using its services, but also the care workers of the establishment. My employer also has a duty of care for staff members, to ensure that working conditions are safe, and suitable to deliver the service.
Intermediate Sanctions and Community Corrections Some of the benefits to intermediate sanctions include the correctional system being able to reduce the inmate population, provide inmates with the opportunity of a second chance, offering a wide range of rehabilitation/treatment programs, and being stricter in regards to supervision of the rules. The Negative effects of intermediate sanctions are there are not enough professionals to monitor offenders who are offered intermediate sanctions. Case loads for parole/probation officers remain high increasing the chance of an offender slipping through the cracks. Another negative effect is certain individuals are incarcerated as punishment instead of being granted an intermediate sanction. Sanctions require involvement, but they also allow officers the use of discretion.
If there are more good programs that would work for these inmate and guide them throughout, each individual should have the responsibility to complete the program and earn something from it. Although, you cannot force an individual to get into the program, at least we should offer the good programs to those who are willing to educate
“Britain, for example they implemented a strategy that focus on preventing prison violence rather than delivering more brutal series of punishments. The British decided to give their most dangerous prisoners more control, rather than less. They reduced isolation and offered them opportunities for work, education, and special programming to increase social ties and skills. In these reformed “Close Supervision Centers,” prisoners could receive mental-health treatment, more phone calls, “contact visits,” and even access to cooking facilities. The government set up an independent body of inspectors to track the results and enable adjustments based on the data.
If you decide you want to go through that path than it is what it is and don’t be * * surprise of the other criminals you have to deal with. The choices you made prove that you do not * * want to follow rules in our society so; your consequences are that you have to pay for those terrible * * choices. One model of a prison was the eastern state model. This was a model that was more about * * having people in a controlled setting and using the space in a humane way. In I really think this model * * is very effective and should be used more often.
How offenders can build positive relationships in custody Relationships It is very important for maintaining a positive relationship between prisoners and those they have to have contact with, whether in custody or on release. If a prisoner has been mixing with other criminals whether outside of prison or in prison, and hasn’t got a very good role model in the community they come from, there is a risk that they may return back to prison because they reoffended, when they got released from prison. But if offenders have a positive role model outside of prison, for example family and friends, and inside prison, like the staff, then their chances of reoffending are greatly reduced. Prisoners might have an isolated family and friends and may find it hard to emerge back into society when they have been released. Unfortunately, it is very common for prisoners to have lost everything when they have been released for example their family, friends, job and their housing.
“Corruption has been a problem in prison contracting historically and it is a problem in other types of government contracting today. It is therefore quite reasonable to be concerned about the possibility of corruption in correctional privatization” (Logan, 1990,p. 211). Sometimes people can be tempted to keep some money for themselves when there is plenty of money around. There have been studies showing that employees and law enforcement have tried to get extra things like money, drugs and sex.
Criminals are sent to prison to pay for their crimes and to be rehabilitated. The reality is that prison only makes them better criminals. Many would believe that prison is a place where inmates are reformed. Unfortunately that is untrue. Across the United States penitentiaries inmates are literally forced to join prison gangs.
The Prison Rules annotated or Prison Rules Compendium should include foremost a portion where Correctional Ethics is emphasized so that the core officers will exude the necessary professional outlook right from the start. 8.
