Unit 201 Communication Outcome 1 - Understand why communication is important in the work setting 1.1 Identify different reasons why people communicate. There are lots of reasons why people communicate. People need to express their needs, share ideas and information, express their feelings, to share experiences and even to socialise. People communicate in order to establish and maintain relationships with each other. People also need to portray their emotions, feelings, pain and opinions. Communication is an essential tool a carer. It is a basic requirement of my job role to communicate with individuals and their families, other members of staff on a daily basis. Communicating with other staff members ensures effective team working and continuity of care. It also ensures any health and safety issues are recognised and reported. All carers attend hand over at the beginning of each shift, thereby keeping other staff informed and aware of current situations within the workplace. 1.2 Explain how effective communication affects all aspects of own work Communication affects all aspects of work and is an essential part of the job. Affective communication is to understand the resident and assist them. Nothing can be done without proper communication, whether its carers expressing to the resident or the resident expressing to the carer. There are lots of people that need to be communicated to such as colleagues, residents, their families and friends. Also communicating to other professionals is a necessity to the job. Each way you communicate will be different according to who you’re communicating to and what you’re communicating. 1.3 Explain why it is important to observe an individual’s reactions when communicating with them It is important to observe an individual’s reactions whilst communicating so that any problems can be identified and dealt with properly.
