UNIT 137 1.1 Explain the sequence and rate of moral development that would normally be expected in children and young people from birth to 19 years. STUDENT NAME: Michelle Spence CITY & GUILDS NUMBER: HTY0298 TUTOR NAME: Susan Broadbent DATE: 16th November 2014 In the following table I have indicated expected milestones in moral development in children from birth to 19 years. After researching I have come to the conclusion that children do not show an understanding of moral behaviours prior to the age of 2 and a half years. AGE | STAGE OF DEVELOPMENT | 2 and a half years | * Children do not understand right and wrong but understand the word No. * Children are aware of the role of adults/parents. * They do not understand what consequences means. | 3 years | * Children have no understanding of right or wrong but can follow simple rules the majority of the time. * Children are capable of a certain level of deception | 4 years | * Children are thoughtful towards others, but can sometimes do things to seek adult approval. * They can be quite deceptive and will be able to tell a deliberate lie. * Children are beginning to understand and can use rules especially when they gain from them; e.g. when using a sand timer for turn taking. | 5 – 6 years | * Children will be keen to understand and use rules. * They have developed more self-control and will be less aggressive towards their peers. | 7 – 9 years | * Children will tell others the rules and are keen to point out when the rules are being broken. * They have developed a conscience and know and understand the difference in right and wrong. * Children will pass onto friends what they believe to be right and wrong and expect them to follow the same set of rules. | 9 – 11 years | * The child will have developed an awareness of consequences to
