UNIT 1: An introduction to working with children E1/E2 The settings that providecare for children and their families locally and nationally are divided in 3 groups. They can be part of the statutory, voluntary or private sector. Statutory settings are services provided by law and founded by the government and local authorities i.e. schools, assessment for Special Educational needs (SENCO), speech therapy, libraries, leisure centres, GP’s and dentist . The Voluntary services are founded mainly by donations and they are non-profit making. Voluntary services in Luton could be: toddlers groups, day care centres, support group, brownies and cadets. Private services are the ones which are provided by individuals and are profit making they do not need to be provided by law i.e. child minders, nannies, after school clubs, homework clubs, music classes and dance classes (see also leaflet attached as appendix). E3 THE UNITED NATIONS CONVENTION ON THE RIGHTS OF THE CHILD(UNCRC) 1989 is the only piece of legislation that is recognised by all the United Nations and gives children and young people under the age of 18 years their own special rights. It is divided in articles and they state that a child has the right to protected from all forms of discrimination, the child’s best interest has to be the main priority when dealing with children,gives the children rights to express themselves freely and their views need to be respected, every child must be free to say what they think and to seek and receive all kinds of information, as long as it is within the law and every child has the right to an education.THE CHILDREN ACT 1989 it covers child protection, parental responsibility and inspection of settings.
