Unit 054 – (A) Principles for implementing Duty of Care in Health, Social Care ot Children’s and Young People’s Settings 1.1 Explain what it means to have a duty of care in own work role. It is important that all staff working in a care setting or enviroment excersice a duty of care within the premisis. Children and young people are classed as vunerable as they have not yet developed the physical and cognitive capacity to care for themselves. Practitioners legally need to put in place procedures to keep children safe within the setting. Duty of care means to so far as reasonable possible look after a child young person and protect them from harm under obligation of the law. In our holiday camp, we make sure that every child is safe and that any accidents or incidents that occur are reported, documented and checked through and signed by management and the parent or gaurdian of the child. We sit children down who we can see need guidance and help them to recognise the right choices, and the concequences of making the wrong ones. We never take sides and make sure that every child is listened to and supported in which ever way we can. 1.2 Explain how duty of care contributes to the safeguarding of individuals. All workers in a childcare setting have a ‘duty of care’ to protect both children and other co-workers. Duty of care means that a person or group has a responsibility to ensure that there is reasonable standard of attention and care given to avoid neglect which may lead to or cause harm to others. It is important to excersice duty of care, especially in young children to help them to develop immune systems which can protect them from childhood illness and other diseases, which may cause them harm ot disable them later in life.
