Unethical Business Research: Tuskegee Syphilis Study Damaris Medina RES/351 Business Research November 20, 2012 Charlene Dunfee There have been many cases where unethical business research has been conducted. This type of research can include situations like the researchers asking inappropriate questions, using the participant’s information in other places other than what the participants know about, and/or tampering with the results of the research, just to name a few. One case where unethical research was conducted was the research of the Tuskegee Syphilis study. This study was a 40-year study that included 400 men, which were promised to have free health care. They did not keep the health of the participants in mind. The researchers were only looking at what they were benefiting from the research and not minding what would happen to all of the participants (Poythress, Epstein, & Stiles, 2011). They wanted to inform other about what was going to happen when someone become ill from the disease. The researchers should have paid close attention to what could have happened to all of the participants, rather than continuing without a care for the well-being of the participants involved. Instead of curing all of the participants, they continued to recruit people and continue to not inform them about the risks that they would be experiencing. The researchers did not pay any regards to the ethical rules that come along with such an experiment. They not only disregarded what the rights of the medical research, but they also disregarded the human rights of all of the people involved (Poythress, Epstein, & Stiles, 2011). Due to the fact that they were not giving the proper treatment to the participants, there were several deaths, as well as non-participants who became infected because they were in contact with a participant from the research. All participants have to make sure that they do their part as well. They should always make sure that they ask as many questions as possible. They should make sure that they fully agree to all of the terms that come along with the research. Cases like the Tuskegee case can be very much prevented. The researchers should have a sense of ethical values, and keep in mind the lives and families of the participants. There are laws about the ethics that should be put behind all business research, no matter what the research is about, they have to follow ethical laws. There should always be ethical values behind all researches regardless of whether or not there are laws about conducting an ethical research. The researchers should keep in mind the well-being of
