Understanding the Research Process Anne Bartholomay PSY / 300 August 19, 2013 Dr. Theresa Watts Defining Research Research in the social and behavioral sciences contribute to the development, administration and evaluation of programs and policies in public health and health services to promote and sustain healthy environments and healthy lives for individuals and populations. (ASPH, 2013). In social sciences research shows its importance by enabling society to anticipate, and respond to, unexpected challenges and changes ("What Research In The Humanities And Social Sciences Offers", 2012). Research in behavioral sciences explains behavior in social function, development, individual variation, and the various social and biological context of behavior ("Behavioral Sciences", 2013). Behavioral research focuses on the relation between external events and observable behaviors while social research requires an acknowledgement of how individuals relate with society; studies the human society and individual relationships through internal events (Kowalski & Westen, 2011). As with all methods of psychological research, it is important to follow the characteristics of good psychological research. These characteristics include theoretical framework, following standardized procedure, generalizability and objective measurement (Kowalski & Westen, 2011). The use of the standard scientific method is also used in psychological research making a standardized way of making observations, gathering data, forming theories, testing predictions and interpreting results ("Research Methods In Psychology", 2013). These combined research methods create the ideal template for a non-biased study.
