Don’t just check him out. Read him.” — Russell Banks “Everything Is Illuminated is a gift, a wonder, a work of profound technical achievement and near-prescient empathetic connection. It’s also very funny. To call it the best first novel I’ve ever read belittles it: it is one of the best novels I’ve ever been fortunate enough to hold in my hands.” — Dale Peck Everything Is Illuminated books by Jonathan Safran Foer A Convergence of Birds: Original Fiction and Poetry Inspired by the Work of Joseph Cornell (editor) Everything Is Illuminated: A Novel E ver y t h i ng Is Illuminated a novel Jonathan Safran Foer houghton mifflin company boston new york 2002 Copyright © 2002 by
Romeo and Juliet By: Steff Commentary This section may appear to readers as unimportant because it is just Capulet and Tybalt talking and nothing happens. On the contrary, this passage illustrates how the characters handle situations given. This may foreshadow problems for each character such as maybe future aggressive conflict with Tybalt. The character Capulet is all a façade. He appears warm hearted and eager to end the conflict at first but then you see his real intentions and his real state of mind is focused on “what the people want” and not what is best for Romeo under the given circumstances of the families’ feud.
Some people would argue that they’d rather not know and continue living their own life with a peaceful mind, but others would argue that people need to know about all these real life events to keep us from harm and keep us prepared for any future massacres. In Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein “ignorance is bliss’ is a big theme in the story. She agrees with the statement because in the beginning of the novel the main character, Victor, joins these seamen on their voyage and he lectures a man named Walton on how having too much knowledge can be dangerous. According to Shelly, in order to not set our self’s up for failure and punishment; we must stay in our comfort zone and believe that ignorance is bliss. Victor warns Walton not to follow in his footsteps, saying, “Learn from me, if not by my precepts, at least by my example, how dangerous is the acquirement of knowledge, and how much happier that man is who believes his native town to be the world, than he who aspires to become greater than his nature will allow…” (pg.
Nathanael’s literary style and theme of his stories were passionate romanticism and mainly dark romanticism. The spectacular author had many amazing works and so many popular books. One of his greatest works was The Scarlet Letter (1850) and Twice-Told Tales (1837). Edgar Allan Poe once said, "The style of Hawthorne is purity itself. His tone is singularly effective—wild, plaintive, thoughtful, and in full accordance with his themes... We look upon him as one of the few men of indisputable genius to whom our country has as yet given birth".
Deception rules the land, self-deception included. Not knowing what you’re doing risks bad faith, and living exclusively in the present, and leaving sodden emotional disasters strewn behind.” Pg. 408. I like to think that deception could be used to show the power of the panopticon. Because your partner is the person you have power over and by using deception they can’t truly see what you are doing, so they go on not doing anything bad because they don’t know if they can see you but they might be watched.
Who do you think is one of the greatest poets in history? If you chose Carl Sandburg then you’re right. Carl Sandburg was an American poet historian, novelist, balladeer, and florist. H.L. Menken called Carl Sandburg insurability an American in every pulse beat.
‘My heart turns to its melancholy work’ has been very carefully worded. Melancholy isn’t a word meaning death, depression, hopelessness and despair, it is simply cheerless but not to the point of gloom. So his job is saddening and repetitive, it could be better, he hopes to move forward but don’t we all? ‘The honey gathered’ in my mind is the dreams gathered from the day. The sorrows are the awakenings from these hopes and the reasons behind not going.
Example, walking away is braver than mouthing off. (This is something I can’t seem to do.). Violence involving calmness means that you have to avoid violence by trying not to be influenced by confliction towards you and others. Three common factors of sanity are peacefulness, joyfulness, and spiritually bound. “No matter what side you are on, you always find someone on your side who wishes that they were on the other.”- Jascha
Thoreau’s well-respected writings are regarded as more than the scrawling of a woodsy hermit. In his own undisputed classic, Walden, he states “The adventurous student will always study classics. . . For what are the classics but the noblest recorded thoughts of man?
He has been considered as one of the greatest short story writers of all time and nearly twelve of his works have been recognized as being flawless in the literary sense. Poe grew up as a foster child, having a rough life, which has definitely played a role in his writing style. In his poem “The Raven,” Poe uses his Gothic writing style to write one of his most beautiful pieces, so how has Poe used symbolism, imagery, and to tone to support his reoccurring theme of sadness and death? Understanding Poe’s past would help know why he wrote the thrillers and suspense narratives that people seemed to fancy for. Poe was born on January 19, 1809 to two young actors.
