Factors influencing choice of leadership style. A key factor in leadership success is an individual's basic leadership style and this plays a key role in the smooth running of an organisation. Autocratic leadership (authoritarian) is a style characterised by individual control over all decisions and there is very little input from team members. These leaders make choices based on their own ideas and judgments and find it hard to accept advice from their team. This leadership style can be of great purpose in some scenarios, for instance when decisions need to be made quickly and without consultation with the rest of the team. Some projects require strong leadership skills in order to get things accomplished quickly and efficiently. An autocratic style can be beneficial during situations that are particularly stressful. During a recent Ofsted Inspection, my team members reacted more effectively to an autocratic style of leadership. This allowed them to concentrate on the tasks ahead in order for a good grading of the organisation. It allowed my team members to focus on performing specific tasks without worrying about having to make organisational decisions. This in turn allowed team members to become skilled at performing certain duties. This model used, did not work with one particular team member, as they did not respond well to being ordered to perform the task ahead. However I recognised that they did respond well to leadership by encouragement and so, noted and appreciated their contributions in a positive way. This had a dramatic effect on the individual’s attitude resulting in a positive approach to the task. Effective communication with my team members was a vital part of my role, inspiring them to achieve their best. When employees trust this leadership it can motivate them to be more productive.
