UNDERSTAND YOUR FATS AND FIBER SCI/241 Leanna Clark 5/3/2012 Fats are essential for our body as human beings because it gives us energy. We all know that our body needs fats in order to be healthy but some people mistake bad fats for good fats so it is important that you understand the difference. Bad fats are fats such as the trans fats and saturated fats. The reason why trans fats and saturated fats are considered to be bad fats is because they “raise blood cholesterol concentrations, contributing to clogged arteries that block the flow of oxygen-rich blood to the heart and brain”. http://www.webmd.com/food-recipes/features/good-fats-bad-fats Saturated fats are fats that are solid and can be found in things like meats, cheese and milk. Saturated fats are found majority in things like snacks, cakes and other various sweets. Saturated fats are really something that you should limit your intake on because it can raise your cholesterol. Like saturated fats Trans fats (trans fatty acids ) also raise your cholesterol, the only difference is it under goes a process called hydrogenation which makes it hard. Trans fatty acids clog arteries, increase the risk for heart disease, diabetes and some cancers. Trans fats (trans fatty acids) can be found in things that are crispy like cookies and pie crust and in foods that have partially hydrogenated oils and shortening. So now that we know about the bad fats let’s talk about fats that are considered good or better for you to intake……………… Fats that are considered “good” or “better” for you to eat are unsaturated fats. Unsaturated fats are liquid and if eaten in healthy moderations it can help to lower your cholesterol unlike saturated fats. Unsaturated fats include polyunsaturated fats and Monounsaturated fat. You can find unsaturated fats in things like oils, butter, omega-3 and -6 fatty acids, sunflower
