Knowledge is gained through an individual’s experiences, education or practical understanding of something. The two main forms of knowledge known to us today are subjective which is knowledge gained by ones experience or inherent from culture, tradition, etc…and objective which is knowledge that cannot be contested or refuted, regardless of situation. A good example would be 1 + 1 = 2... This is objective knowledge; because any other meaning attributed to the statement would make it incorrect. Many philosophers throughout time have tried to find the basis for a set of completely objective truths about life. Descartes came close with "cogito ergo sum" but was unable to go further. Life for the most part, at least for human beings, is a series of subjective moments, as much as we would like our truths to be objective. But that doesn’t mean objective knowledge should be sidelined as it does contribute to our understanding about a certain subject. For example if a person states that 2+2 = 5, this does not mean that they just have a different view point but are mistaken as this is a false claim. We know this as we rely on our objective knowledge.
Here is an example that proves how people rely heavily on subjective knowledge. Our world today has drastically changed due to effects of terrorist activities increasing throughout. This has caused thousands of deaths and has created a grave fear within people. If we look at the objective knowledge, it is said that these terrorists are mainly religious or social extremists who are against society and hence want to attack and destroy it. But as most of the terrorists are Muslims or have Arabic origin, the mindset of the world has changed and now people of this religion are targeted and discriminated against. Here we can see that people have made this judgment on the Islamic community purely based upon subjective knowledge and hence we can argue by saying that subjective knowledge can be misleading at times as in this case of...
