Tyranny of the Majority When our founding fathers decided to form a new government, the first thing that they wanted to address was the idea of tyranny of the majority. The idea that all men were created equal and that all men should have equal rights was in their thoughts as they began their quest. First of all, what is Tyranny of the Majority and how could they form a government that would address it? Tyranny of the Majority is exactly what it sounds like; a majority of tyrants putting their own agendas over that of the minorities. They best way that they could address this issue would to be to set up the new government with limits on legislative powers; separation of powers between the three branches; and equal representation by state.…show more content…
Power and wealth, some consider being the best things in life. So to not expect it in politics would be ridiculous. Being able to rule a country and have all its wealth and power would be any dictator’s dream. A dictator: an example of perfect Tyranny of the Majority. Adolph Hitler is the ultimate example of a tyrant. He built a new army in Germany and a new way of life; without the minorities. Hitler’s government killed millions of Jews and other minorities such as homosexuals and gypsies. On a not so radical display of Tyranny of the Majority, I want to show an example from my local community. There is a long standing festival in Luling, Texas; the Watermelon Thump. Each year a queen is chosen from the entering senior class girls and each year the rules are the same; anyone can vote. The winner will get a substantial college scholarship for her college of choice. So there is a local group of women whose daughters have all made “queen” and they want to make sure that the “right kind” of girl gets it each year. Some of these women work out of town; they have parties the day of the voting and have even been known to rent buses to bring voters in. Again, we are back to the dream of wealth and power. We could be like Hussein’s Iraq, Hitler’s Germany, or Stalin’s Russia. Yes, our system has it problems, but we haven’t killed millions on our own soil for religious, racial, or sexual orientation. We have tried to hold every American accountable for their crimes and prevent Tyranny of the
