Tyra Banks Tyra came from bleak beginnings and was born on December 4, 1973, in Los Angeles, California. She has grown as an amazing woman who has changed the fashion world in the best possible way. As a model and a very morally correct woman she taught people that appearance do not matter nearly as much as what is on the inside of a person. Tyra grew up with a single mother and a brother, with not very much money. As a child she was ridiculed for her looks. Many children of her school didn't like her because she was the only African American girl in her school, and this is right after the idea that African American people should be equals. Her slender figure and thick, curly black hair made her a target at school. Tyra was a tall, skinny and awkward adolescent. She was constantly teased by her brother and her classmates, and often ran home crying to her mother for comfort. Late in high school, everything changed for her. She filled out her skinny frame, began to work out and finally decided to become a model. Tyra pursued that goal with the determination. Her first modeling job started in Paris when she was 17. An agent with Elite Model Management had offered Tyra her first modeling job. When she accepted the job, Tyra didn't think that a trip to Paris will be the beginning of a long modeling and acting career, but rather a great way to make money for college. Tyra was pinned with the Michael Award for 'Supermodel of the Year' in 1997. After she became successful in the modeling business she decided to get into the television. Her first TV appearance was acting as Jackie, Will Smith's ex-girlfriend, on the series "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air." She's also appeared in the hit movie “Coyote Ugly“.
