The Types of Learning Styles J-Micheal Ford March 20, 2012 There are several different people with different types of learning styles. Not all people learn the same way. Some people may learn by taking notes while others may learn just by listening to the person teaching. There are some people that are quick to learn while others are not so quick to learn. There are four main learning types which are auditory, tactile, visual non- verbal, and visual verbal. Auditory Learners What does auditory learning mean? Auditory learning is when someone is talking and the information is being processed in an oral language format. People that are auditory learners can benefit in many types of ways as well. According to Suzanne Miller, “Join a study group.” (Miller, 2012.) Students that join a study group benefit from their peers because the student might have missed important information. A personal example of this would be, “I was in a sociology lecture and had to leave immediately because I was getting sick and the professor was talking about what was going to be on our final exam, I had some of my friends from the class give me their notes so that I could study.” (Ford, 2005.) Tactile or Kinesthetic Learners What is tactile or kinesthetic learning? Is a style of learning that involves touching, manipulating objects, or doing things. Robert S. Feldman states, “For instance, some people enjoy the act of writing because of the feel of a pencil or a computer keyboard- the tactile equipment of thinking out loud.” (Feldman, R. S., 2011, pg. 18-19.) Visual: Non-Verbal Learners Who are visual non-verbal learners? Non-verbal learners are the type of people that learn best from pictures and flashcards. According to Karen E. Hamilton, “They tend to be readers who diligently take down every word.” (Hamilton, 2000.) An example of a non- verbal learner would be someone that
