In order to improve my communication skills I will need to fully understand the three meanings of verbal messages and how to get them across to my audience. The first is the semantic meaning- the meaning of a verbal message derived from the language itself. The second is the linguistic meaning- using language that respects others while avoiding language that offends. Finally, the third is the pragmatic meaning- meaning of a verbal message that arises from understanding the practical consequences of an utterance.
I provide active support to individuals to enable them to express their communication needs, views and preferences by making available any equipment that is required e.g. pictures, hearing aids and devices or speaking utensils. When talking to individuals I provide active support by understanding the communication difficulties of the individuals and I am patient and allow them time to express themselves when they feel comfortable to. Make sure you speak clearly and pronounce your words, and check the tone and pitch of your voice , you don’t always need to shout. It is crucial in building a relationship with the client. Not just nodding of the head type of listening, but it must be active listening. The client needs to know that the helper hears them, understands them and is involved in what they are saying. Asking questions and using reflective listening is important, all while keeping the objectives in mind. Listening gives the helper insight on the situation, helps gather information and gives clues on to what the clients thought process may be.
It requires you to listen, observe and reflect on what another person is trying to communicate to you. The cycle involves first a message being coded then the message being sent. Then the message is received by the other person and decoded. The message is then understood by this person who then codes their own message to send to you and you will react the same way as when this person received your message. All of this is acted upon without consciously thinking about it.
