Theories of communication There are three types of communication these are Argyle’s one to one communication theory 1972, Tuckman’s stages of group interaction 1965 and Bales group communication. The first theory of communication is Argyle’s one to one communication. Michael Argyle looked at both verbal and non-verbal communication. Argyle developed the ‘communication cycle’. This theory was developed in hope that it could explain and predict how communication occurs between two people when communicating. Argyle said that communication is a skill that has to be learnt and practised to keep it up to date. Communication involves people sending, receiving and responding to someone‘s verbal or non-verbal messages. The communication cycle with an aim an idea that someone has had a thought, the message is then encoded into language that can be understood with the appropriate words. The message is then sent this can be done via speech, writing such as a letter or via technology i.e. text message, email. The other person then receives this message, they then have to decode the message in a way so they can understand so they can process the message been sent. The message then should be understood, this will then lead to the communication cycle to be repeated as the person shall respond with their own idea. To ensure that one to one communication is effective and processed correctly. There are five different types of communication, these include verbal, non-verbal, special, written and electronic. Every type of communication suits people individually and it is important to know the ways in which different communications are acknowledged. Verbal communication is the way people communicate when talking; this includes formal and informal language used and the tone.
