Two kinds essay In the short story by Amy Tan, we are presented with two important characters. Jing Mei and her mother. Jing Mei and her mother has left China they try to retrieve the American dream. Symbolizing them leaving their safe zone and jumping at something unknown. And that is what the American dream is all about. The children normally just follow their parents, because most children have grown up with a variant of the following phase: “mom and dad knows best” Jing Mei is going though a lot of changes in a short matter of time, leaving her home country, getting a new look and the increasing pressure for her to be a prodigy. Jing Mei is that kind of girl who sets an example for children like her. She uses her courage to stand up to her authoritarian figure. Moreover take matters into her own hands and creating her own identity. Already in the start of the text Jing Mei shows signs of being an independent girl. “I liked the haircut, and it made me actually look forward to my future fame” despite her mothers opinion she liked the haircut. At first she was onboard with her mother’s dream. However along the way she starts to create her own identity, and begins to stray from her mother’s wishes for her. She discovers what is important for herself instead of what is important for her mother. “I had new thoughts, willful thoughts – or rather, thoughts filled with lots of won’ts. I won’t let her change me, I promised myself. I won’t be what I’m not.” She tried hard not to learn anything or fulfill her mother’s expectations. However when she is asked if she wants the piano she is doubtful. The piano could symbolize something of her, something she has lost along the way while creating her identity. “it made me feel proud, as if it were a shiny trophy that I had won back” That is why she can’t let the piano go entirely.
