Humanity and technology have a relationship of depending on one another, but technology is the dominant partner in the bond. Technology has had a huge affect on our society. Some of the consequences have been positive and some have been negative, but ultimately technology has changed the way people live today. People see and use technology every day, from the moment they wake up to check their e-mails to the moment they go to bed and set their alarm clocks. Technology has shaped us to be the people we are today. Technology has its pros and cons, but it has made us very lazy and dependent on technology. In Sherry Turkle’s essay, “Alone Together”, she encourages people to find solitude and mentions how people are having intimate relationships with cell phones, social media, and other forms of technology. Turkle shows how much people depend on their phones or on social media to make them feel a certain way or how they communicate with others. She also talks about how the thrill of talking to someone through a computer, or machine as she calls it; the online world is only about becoming anyone one wants, but it also gives one the courage to say anything one wants, and not worry about being accepted. When one is behind a “machine” it’s easy to confront someone or tell someone what one thinks. The same goes for texting. It’s so much easier when one is mad at someone about something to text it to them instead of calling or saying it in person. Similarly in Adam Gopnik’s “Bumping into Mr. Ravioli”, Gopnik talks about how technology has evolved into a new lifestyle. He shows how people are too busy and how technology prolongs and avoids personal interaction. Both authors show how
