In Virgil’s The Aeneid, after sailing for Italy, where Aeneas’s preordained destiny to found a city of Rome lay, a terrifying storm throws them off their course to a land named, Carthage, where Dido, the queen of the land welcomes them. Scenes from the movie, Troy that depicted the end of the Trojan War when in the last campaign the Trojans were tricked into accepting a wooden horse as a gift, inside of which, unbeknownst to them, harbored a bevy of Greek soldiers in its hollow belly, up to the end of the movie where Aeneas makes his prophetic escape, was a significant piece of Aeneas’s story told to Dido, alongside other stories of his daunting voyage, in the initial lines of the Poem, The Aeneid. Another intriguing contrast and comparison of the Trojan War and The Aeneid is that of epic heroes, Achilles and Aeneas - they were each gifted a mighty sword. In the movie Troy, Achilles is gifted a powerful sword made by the god Hephaestus, while Aeneas in The Aeneid, is presented a sword by the god Venus. Emblazoned on the shield
This is how Homer “gained his fame.” Many other scholars also believe the idea that “Homer” could have meant any travelling scholar, as there were no written records back then. The two poems are talking about a period in Greek history during the Trojan War. The Iliad is a lengthy poem about the Trojan War, and its’ ending. The poem starts out with the Achaean army taking over the town of Chryse and continued to tell the story of a greedy leader in the Achaean army, Agamemnon, and how he makes enemies with one of his best fighters, Achillies. The story goes on to tell about how the gods toy around with the humans, and take sides over each other that other gods may not like.

It all started when King Darius decided to conquer the tiny Greek city states of mainland Greece. King Darius sent messengers to ask for presents of Greek earth and water, which would be a sign that the Greeks would accept rule by the Persians. Instead, the Greeks threw the messengers in wells and pits, and told them that was their earth and water. King Darius was furious and sent soldiers and cavalry by ship to Greece, and they assembled themselves on the plain of Marathon. Miltiades, a great general for Greece, convinced other Greek commanders that the Greeks should fight the Persians at Marathon.
