Although the natural hazard was very destructive only 30 people died, and some of these deaths could have been prevented. As a response to the storm the state government ordered a review of current prediction and preparation strategies and the report came to a number of conclusions. As America is an MEDC they could avoid to design a new £15 million research aircraft that will be better for predicting future hurricanes. By educating the population of Florida people can know what to do in case one occurs. Alternative provision for essential emergency services, this assists the preparation, prediction and coping with effects.
Hurricanes and tsunamis are two of the many natural disasters in the world. They are very different but yet alike and affect people in the world everyday. To further examine the natural disasters, let us take a look at the formation, death toll, and reconstruction cost of hurricanes and tsunamis. Many scientists have researched and studied how hurricanes and tsunamis are formed. Hurricanes, also called typhoons in other parts of the world, start as thunderstorms.
The effect of Hurricane Katrina on New Orleans was extremely severe, resulting from one of the most deadly natural disasters in U.S. history. By August 30th, 2005, one day after the Category 4 storm made landfall, about 80 percent of the city of New Orleans, was flooded with some parts of the city under 20 feet of water. The flood was caused by several levees breaches, which most people didn’t believe it could breach, due to a combination of a powerful storm surge, strong winds and excess water in the bodies of water surrounding the city. After reading the author’s response, her curiosity was based on her belief that the delayed response time was due to racism. She first noticed when watching the T.V.

Now that reservations have been made for this trip, I am forced to consider whether or not purchasing insurance for an additional fee is the best option. Research has been conducted to determine this important decision. The calculated probabilities of a hurricane taking place during my scheduled cruise and whether or not the cruise will be canceled due to the hurricane are included in this research. The research shows that there is a 5% probability that the cruise will be canceled due to a hurricane (University of Phoenix, n.d.). On the contrary, this data would also mean that there is a 95% chance that the cruise will take place as scheduled (University of Phoenix, n.d).
Throughout the afternoon an unprecedented amount of rain fell, estimated at over 1.400 million litres in just 2 hours, nearly 200,000 litres a second. The rainfall quickly made its way into rivers that rose at an alarming rate as they flowed through Boscastle. 9 minutes later a flood watch was issued. 3 hours and 1 minute later at 15:00 the first of many power cuts where caused by lightning, 30 minutes later, the river valency began to flood. 16 minutes later there was a reported rise of 2m in one hour.
A shining example of this type of response can be seen in the BP Oil Spill. This manmade disaster affected thousands of individuals and businesses in the Gulf Coast region as well as creating a cascade affect in ecological, healthcare and economical stability throughout the United States. Like ripples created in a pond when a tiny pebble is thrown in the after affects; experienced by the individual as well as the communities; generated from the original event are similar though they may be experienced at lesser degrees nationwide. The BP Oil Spill news reads like a Steven Segal movie script. It begins on a beautiful spring day (April 20th) with a failed preventer and ends with mass destruction of the surrounding environment and a way of life for those live in the Gulf area.
After which the barely noticed island became the centre of the world’s news channels, it became one of the most noticed natural disasters in history with celebrities and normal people alike doing allsorts to raise money and aid for the victims of the quake. Soon there was over £12million for the victims. It is thought that over 150,000 people were killed but the exact number is unknown, there were also thought to be over 250,000 casualties. There are any factors that influenced the amount of deaths and injuries. In this essay I will cover many of the factors and conclude which one I feel had the biggest impact.
The Reconstruction Finance Corporation was given the authority to make disaster loans to repair and reconstruct public facilities that were damaged during an earthquake or other natural disasters (FEMA, 2007). A series of hurricanes and earthquakes that hit the United States in the 1960’s help develop the Federal Disaster Assistance Administration (FEMA, 2007). This particular emergency management program was to focus mainly on natural disasters. Natural disasters were being recorded and noticed more often due to the increase population spreading throughout the country. With the increase of population, people were building houses everywhere, including areas at risk of floods.
history, struck early in Bush’s second term. Katrina formed in late August during the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season and devastated much of the north-central Gulf Coast of the United States, particularly New Orleans. Bush declared a state of emergency in Louisiana on August 27, and in Mississippi and Alabama the following day; he authorized the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to manage the disaster, but his announcement failed to spur these agencies to action. The eye of the hurricane made landfall on August 29, and New Orleans began to flood due to levee breaches; later that day, Bush declared that a major disaster existed in Louisiana, officially authorizing FEMA to start using federal funds to assist in the recovery effort. On August 30, DHS Secretary Michael Chertoff declared it "an incident of national significance",triggering the first use of the newly created National Response Plan.
