RUNNING HEAD: TREATMENT OF CHILDREN OBSERVATION As we get older and begin to stand more our own in the world being a kid again for some does not seem that bad. Overtime we develop our identity, although the process may be different for each individual we all go through developmental life changes. In respect to child development, Greenspan & Greenspan (2003), created a developmental model that display the levels of growth that should be achieved from infancy to adolescence. Greenspan’s model (2003) consists of four developmental levels: (1) Attends and engages, (2) Communicates with gestures and behaviors, (3) Creates internal images (ideas) share them with others (i.e. symbols, mental representation), and (4) Categorizes these meanings and makes connections between them. Simply watching how a child acts in his/her natural setting can tell a lot about the child developmentally. Potential growth delays with respect to motor skills, processing abilities, and social interactions can sometimes be identified during observation of a child. During spring break I had the pleasure of interviewing a former coworker “Jeanette” and observing her child “Anise”. Before observing her daughter, I interviewed Jeanette about her pregnancy with Anise and about her continuing development till present. For the most part, Jeanette had a healthy pregnancy. She took all her prenatal vitamins and attended every doctor’s appointment. However, she did have some issues around eating and weight gain. Jeanette was having a hard time with eating because she was terrified of gaining too much weight. This idea led her to miss meals or only eat fruit and drink water throughout the day. She mentioned how the doctor became concerned because she was losing weight instead of gaining it. The doctor told her the importance of eating and how not eating can be severely detrimental to the baby’s
