My Personal Perspective of Nursing Nursing is a profession that I have admired for over fourteen years. It was not until my aunt had a stroke that I began to pay attention to the profession. I would go to the hospital and sit with her every night for hours at a time. The nurses would come in to care for her and explain everything they were doing. After a couple of weeks of being in an out of the hospital visiting her, I told her daughter and son-in law that I thought I could be a nurse. My cousin’s husband told me that it was just because I was caring for her. I thought about what he said and figured maybe he’s right. Several years later my son’s father was wrestling with a friend and he was dropped. His seventh vertebra was fractured. Again I found myself in the Trauma unit linked up with the nurses that were caring for him. They too explained in detail what they were doing and what needed to be done. After brainstorming about what my purpose in life is, I realized how much I enjoy helping and caring for others. My philosophy is easily carried into my professional life. While attending school, I serve tables at a local restaurant. Again I am working with others in an environment where care and compassion is needed for both the customer and my co-workers. Philosophy is the study of general and fundamental problems, such as those connected with existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language. (Hurley, 2012) When thinking about what is required of a nurse, he or she is the exact definition of the word “philosophy”. My perspective on nursing as a career is to be a patient advocate through communication, education, and to be able to apply critical thinking, and decision making skills to help better the patients' well being. It will be important to provide the highest quality of care possible, and to achieve excellence in the profession,
