Unit 6 Understand child and young person’s development. 09.09.13 Review A child's development usually follows a known and predictable course. The acquisition of certain skills and abilities is often used to gauge such development. Children will reach milestones at certain ages throughout their development, if a child does not seem to be achieving these areas of development this may be a concern and an area that needs special attention. From birth to 19 years a child should achieve a number of significant development areas, these are determined by a sequence of development and the rate of development.
This development in children includes both emotional and social development. From infants to adults, children are constantly adapting and learning about the environment and the world surrounding them (Maggi & Irwin, 2008). As a result, they begin to understand how to co-exist with others and the world. It is very early on when the child develops a certain personality depending on the type of upbringing and environment provided. Children do develop differently depending on their genetic makeup and environment, parents and guardians can play a huge role to ensure that the child grows up to be an emotionally mature individual.
In the developing field of Early Years, it is becoming more and more important for practitioners to have an awareness of the many topics that impact on the provision available to young children. This means that children must first finish one area of development before moving to another developmental milestone. If a child has difficulty meeting a milestone, it can mean some delay in other areas too. These developments can vary in each child. Developments in social and emotional, physical, intellectual and language begin from birth and continue into adolescents and it’s within these areas that a sequence is formed. An example of this could be that a baby will learn to hold their head up before learning to sit unaided.

1.2 Explain the difference between sequence of development and rate of development and why the difference is important. It is important to know the difference between sequence and rate of development, as sequence development is the sequence a Child must develop in, for example; at an early age a baby will first lift its head, before rolling onto its side, then sitting up to get into a crawling position, then it may pull itself up to eventually being able to stand alone. A sequence development is exactly that, a Child must first finish one area of development before moving onto the next developmental milestone. The rate of development is the pace in which that specific Child develops at. These factors are taken into account in all areas of development, such as; physical, emotional, intellectual and even social development.
It is important to understand and remember that although children usually develop in the same sequence, the rate of their development can vary from child to child and will vary with regards to each child’s abilities, gender, race and needs. Here is the typical sequence and rate of development for children that would normally be expected. Physical Development 0-1 years old: The first year of a baby’s life is the most important for brain development and the impact that it will have on the children and their learning throughout their lives. During the first month of their lives, a baby will hold its head and in time they will bear weight and begin to roll over. By 6-9 months, the baby is able to sit unsupported and will then begin to pull themselves up into a standing position.

The sequence of development is a pattern in which a child develops from infancy, through childhood and into adulthood, these are usually categorized in two ways: personal factors: factors that are specific to a child such as: disabilty, health status, impairment, learning difficulty, bereavment etc.
As these generations age, society changes as well as the family values. Adjustments are made to meet both individual and society needs. The three key processes in which children learn values and develop character should start with the forming of emotional attachments, teaching of pro-social behavior, and respect for authority; and abiding by the rules both within the family structure and society. The forming of emotional attachment should start at birth. First the infant bonds with its mother.
The preschool years, age three to five years, are the next step after toddlerhood. A child should continue to make vast progress in their language, motor skills development, and their overall view of the world (McGoldrick, Carter, & Garcia-Preto, The Expanded Family Life Cycle: Individual, Family, and Social Perspectives, 2011). According to Erikson these preschool years are referred to as the stage of “initiative versus guilt” (Cloninger, 2004). The goal of this stage is for the child to develop more purpose. This stage builds upon the autonomy the child has developed.
