Transfer Of Learning

Positive transfer can be defined as rapid learning in a new situation because the responses required are identical to skills learned in an earlier situation. Positive transfer can only take place when a skill in one form of physically activity helps the learning of a different skill in a different form of physical activity. Examples of positive transfer are easy to recognise, majorly in sports that have very similar characteristics, for example netball and basketball. A skill in netball that can be positively transferred into basketball would be passing. A chest pass for example in netball is identical to a chest pass in basketball. Retroactive transfer is defined as a form of transfer which involves the learning and performance of a skill influences the performance of another skill that has already been learned. This type of transfer can only happen when a skill in a specific activity that has just been learned enhances a skill in a different activity that has previously been learned by the learner. Examples of retroactive transfer occurring can be harder to find when compared to positive transfer, but a good clear example of retroactive transfer occurring could be seen in the example of a successful tennis serve (the throwing the ball up phase) may have been enhanced by the previously learned skill of an overarm throw in cricket. Negative transfer is the complete opposite of positive transfer. This can be defined as the interference of previous learning in the process of learning something new. Negative transfer takes place when a one skill from an activity impedes the learning and performance of another skill in a different activity. A good and clear example of negative transfer taking place would be in the sports of badminton and tennis, a shot in badminton that requires the participant to have a loose wrist would be negatively transferred to a shot in
