Leadership and Teamwork in the Public Services. P1 Authoritarian- This style is used when leaders want their employees to do something, they tell them how they want it done and how they want it accomplished, without getting advice of their followers. This style is more of a bossing around and unprofessional style. Democratic-This style is used when leaders want to include one or more employees in the decision making it is not a sign of weakness, it is so that the employees will be more confident with their own ideas and decision making. Decision making with your employees will let them gain respect for the leader and become more determined.
The managers monitor but do not get involved in day to day operations with drivers. An office would be different yet again with more a” democratic” or “people orientated” environment with leanings towards more collective goals and each individual contributing their efforts to the team objectives. 1.2 – The differing styles all have their place and trying to input one style into another would not necessarily work. You couldn’t put a people orientated style into a task orientated situation like the one above. Autocratic leadership can cause aggravation and discontent in the workforce.
Sometimes this style is also described as autocratic. It is a common leadership style and is used when a leader needs to keep as much power as possible and keep control over the decision making. Subordinates are expected to obey orders without arguing back or in need of an explanation to do what they have been ordered to do. In the public services this leadership maybe used when you have all the information to solve the problem or you are working to a deadline. This is not an effective way to get the best result from a team, but it has some advantages in situations where there is pressure to get the task done, like in the armed forces.
Would you promote someone into a key leadership position who is considered a “people pleaser”? Explain. In my opinion no, because being a leader is not about pleasing someone it’s all about standing by his/her decision and take control of his/her vision. Leadership is a key role in organization; a leader must be able to utilize both leadership and management qualities. A people pleaser is not going to be an effective manager because they are too worried about what other people think and not about what the needs are of the company.
Communication does not only mean a manager talking to his or her employees, but also listening to their concerns and problems. For a manager, it is important to ensure their understanding of company objectives and their individual job roles, but it is equally important to show them the importance of their feedback to the achievement of targets and standards (www.careers-help.co.uk). Communication in the workplace is vital because effective motivation can’t take place without it. A manager needs to communicate with their staff on a regular basis, conduct weekly team meetings, discuss issues, and deal with grievances to remove communication hurdles. Effective communication allows employees to offer feedback and to provide creative ideas to help enhance and change business practices, policies, and procedures.
Sometimes team members may not have the necessary skills or knowledge for the decision making process. The democratic leader will need to be aware of the team member’s skills and knowledge to determine if he or she is right for the team. Leadership Theories Leadership theories involve trait-based, situational, and transformational leadership. Trait-based theories are not learned but rather born with the characteristics of an effective leader. Trait-based theories cannot be developed or changed.
Different issues will occur that will keep Huffman from reaching higher goals. Huffman’s employees worked hard to keep pace and maintain a stable trend that has been set by Huffman’s competitors. Huffman is unsatisfied with overall results that his organization has not been able to rise above the competition, but to remain at the competition’s side. One issue facing Huffman is the company’s internal marketing culture. An organization is able to give each customer individual and unique attention, but it depends on the customer’s preference.
Benjamin E. Hermalin (Dec., 1998) showed that, People follow their leader voluntarily rather than pressure and leader has the power to change followers mind of rational agent. He make them follow blindly without justification. Transformational leader influences followers to transcend their self interests for the good of the organization and make them doing their existing task new ways and put extra effort that brings innovation in the organization. Transformational leader is creative and inspire followers to be creative to accomplish organizational goals or vision ( Robbins and Judge,2009). Karl W. Kuhnert and Philip Lewis, (Oct., 1987) states that, Transformational leadership changes followers values, needs and beliefs to improve performance and quality of performance and convert followers into leaders and may convert leader as moral agent.
Even if these views or ideas are beneficial to the team. Employees are not allowed to criticise or question the way in which the leader gets things done. Employees will be expected to obey orders without being given an explanation. In this regard, Abraham Maslow's model indicates that basic, low-level needs such as physiological requirements and safety must be satisfied before higher-level needs such as self-fulfillment are pursued. The basic need which Shank’s old boss failed to meet is the need for self-actualization. This is the highest level of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Self-actualizing people are self-aware, concerned with personal growth, less concerned with the opinions of others and interested fulfilling their potential.
