The trait approach of leadership states that certain behavior or characteristics helps an individual to become an effective leader. Even though this approach focuses more on intuitive function, it can bring about some difficulties. Many challenging things frequently come up. Some may be from the environment, while others arise from coworkers. The description of trait approach considers these leadership characteristics as innate. With the above said, some leaders are classified as born leaders because they use their emotional composition in problem solving. Reading the book Leadership Theory and Practice sixth edition, I realize that researchers have worked a lot to bring about the notion that leadership is an influence process. After studying the trait approach of leadership, I have gained insight and I’m confident saying that people are born with several personality traits. The trait approach lays more emphases on emotional intelligence. In addition, my reading of the text makes me understand that leadership is a complex process having multiple dimensions. Again, leadership can be approached in several ways. One approach is that leaders are effective or ineffective due to their personality traits. In other words, they are successful or lack effectiveness because of their beliefs, values, culture of origin and ethics which is the personality trait approach. For example, some people make the case that high moral values are essential to success; however, many do not buy this idea either due to their cultures, values and beliefs. The leadership questionnaire added some understanding of traits approach. My scores on the questionnaire made the description even more important and give me some insight to know that the things done today can make a positive change in the next generation.
