Traditional Training Methods: The Pros and Cons Traditional training methods are used every day when training employees in the work place. I will discuss some common traditional training methods and which ones I believe are most effective and why. I will also discuss which traditional training methods I believe to be the most ineffective and why. Traditional trainings methods vary and when delivered correctly can be an invaluable tool. There are two main groups in traditional training methods; presentation and hands on. Presentation training methods consist of lecture and audiovisual. Lecture is a staple in traditional training methods. According to the article, “Traditional Training Methods”, published by the University of Idaho, it states, “First, it is relatively inexpensive. You can present a large amount of information to large groups of trainees. It is also an appropriate method for knowledge acquisition. If trainees need to acquire basic information and facts, the lecture method is generally effective for this purpose.” Lecture is an ineffective way to train because of the time and way it is delivered. Depending on the amount of information, students may need to sit in on very lengthy lectures. As stated on http://traininganddevelopment.naukrihub.com, “Lectures tends to be less effective because lectures require long periods of trainee inactivity.” The method of audiovisual is the same as a lecture, but lacks a live teacher. This I believe will be a more effective method than lecture because audiovisual is consistent and uses diagrams and pictures to represent information. “It also allows for a very consistent presentation. Additionally, some trainees may learn better by “seeing” rather than “hearing.” A picture or diagram may convey more meaning to some trainees than the same concept described verbally” (www.class.uidaho.edu).
