The Tragic Story of Antigone

In our lives, we all we have to face at one point, a riddle or situation that you have to sacrifice for. In other words, doing something against your government or rules. In the play Sophocles, Antigone had to face a similar situation. Antigone in the play, had to deal with a situation where she had to choose between the government and family. What for? To die for burying her own brother, that is also from her blood and flesh. In contrary, leaving him to be eaten and pecked by crows till he rots, or do the honors and bury him. Wisely, she chose to be loyal and follow her faith and bury him. As a devoted family member, she wasn’t scared to let everyone know about her going to bury her brother, as her sister said: “ That I will not tell a word to anyone, but to keep it quiet.” But her sister simply responded: “Tell everyone you know.” Showing that she cares no less than what people think that her own family values. However, she knew there would be a high risk for it, although Creon was her uncle, from her family and he still had to follow the laws of those who break it. Knowing that she had broken a law, Creon was to put her to death. Sadly, Antigone couldn’t bear of this happening, so she killer herself instead, by hanging. This kind of punishment was necessary; it’s worth dying for; it’s your family, the ones that have always been there for you and made you to what you have become now. Something to die for; is for stealing, killing, bribing and so on. So honestly, was all of this worth it? To be put to death just because Antigone buried her brother? Truly, it is worth it, because family always comes first, never would someone’s life have to end for doing they’re rights of values of what they follow, because it’s what they are obligated to do.
