Traffic crashes occur more at exit ramp area than entrance ramp as well as main line. In order to address the operational issues on freeway exit ramp, this paper using simulation software CORSIM 6.0 to compare the operational difference on four typical exit ramp types. The four typical exit ramp types are one lane tapered type, one lane parallel type, two lane tapered type and two lane parallel type. (Sometimes they are known as one-lane exit with optional lane, one-lane exit without optional lane, two-lane exit with optional lane, two-lane exit without optional lane). Some important parameters, such as traffic volume, free flow speed, truck percentage, advance traffic sign (exit sign) position, trucks restricted to a set of lanes, etc, are tested for sensitivity analysis under certain scenarios. The simulation interior parameters of some case are calibrated by field observation. The finding of this paper may be applied for three purposes: Technical support for design; Reconstruction of an exit ramp and evaluation of a target exit ramp. Index Terms—Design, Freeway Exit Ramp, Simulation Figure 1 Tapered One-Lane Exit Figure 2 Tapered Two-Lane Exit INTRODUCTION Interstate highways are one of the most important components of the transportation infrastructure in America. Freeway ramps play an important role in the whole interstate transportation system. The rapid growth of traffic in USA has caused queues on
