“Traffic deaths from drunken driving have fallen steadily, with those involving teenagers 16 to 19 declining by 39.1 percent from 1982 to 1990, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)”. (Clark, 1992). Even though drinking and driving is a crime thousands of teens continue to get behind the wheel and kill thousands of innocent people in alcohol related crashes every year. There are drunken accidents because teens don’t take drinking and driving seriously. Teens just want to feel the pleasure and they want to feel good but don’t think about the other people or even there selves that they can kill on the road.
One of the biggest causes of drunk driving is the person who hasn’t adequately prepared for the situation. They drive to the bar or party alone and end up drinking more than they had planned without thinking about how they’ll get home. Many drinkers, at this point, become too embarrassed to ask for a ride or underage drinkers are afraid they’ll get in trouble if they reveal they made a mistake. Others simply don’t care. They hear about the deaths and injuries and are aware of the risks and the potential
Drinking and driving is very dangerous and many people have their lives shattered and ruined because of drunk drivers. That is why it is becoming socially unacceptable. People are finally starting to realize how dangerous this can really be. With the help of new laws, and continued hard work, the number of drinking and driving accidents should be very little in the future. Anyone that is caught while intoxicated should never have the right to drive again.

Many people every year are killed or injured because of drunk drivers, and most of the people that are killed are innocent bystanders. When a person’s blood alcohol content is over the legal limit he becomes much more impaired and are at a higher risk at hurting themselves or others. I am strongly against drinking and driving and I think that who ever is caught drinking and driving should be thrown into jail and fined a great sum of money. Drinking and driving has been a problem since alcohol has been around, it affects the body and mind greatly.
There are many similarities and differences between texting while driving and drinking while driving. Some of these differences and similarities would have to be that they both are illegal, they both impair the driver and they both cause accidents, injuries and death. Please let me remind you that they are both very dangerous and many people do them both every day. However, one can be more dangerous than the other, but I let you, the reader, decide which one is the most dangerous based upon the comparison and contrast I will make regarding texting while driving and drinking while driving. Drunk driving is defined as operating a motor vehicle (car, bus, truck, moped etc) after consuming alcohol. In 2003 42, 643 fatalities were caused by vehicle crashes, out of those 17,013 (40%) were alcohol related. A crash is considered alcohol related if any driver, pedestrian or passenger involved has any trace of alcohol or there is a suspicion of alcohol usage. Unfortunately intoxicated victims of crashes sustain worse injuries and are more likely to be seriously injured than the sober victims according to a study by the University of Michigan.
Many states began passing legislation either in response to fatal crashes involving texting while driving, or near fatal crashes that involved texting while driving. By the early part of 2010, 21 states had banned texting while driving. De Soto provides numerous statistics that compare drunk driving to texting. The studies were used showed that texting while driving is just as dangerous to public safety as drunk driving. De Soto list several fatal and non-fatal accidents cases from New York to Washington State from texting while driving.
One of those that were not happy were businesses that served or sold alcohol, because more Americans were beginning to drink at home rather than a bar or restaurant their businesses were being affected. There was also controversy about what kind of punishment to give offenders, as far as how much jail time for first, second and third time offenders. While some thought the jail time was excessive, to the survivors of those that had lost their lives in these accidents they did not seem like the punishment was harsh enough.
