The wives no longer cook for the family or take care of the children and the husband is no longer the primary sources for the family. She defines family being legally married couples sharing a household, which a male provides the income and a female has the responsibility for taking care of the husband, household, and children. Child rearing, not economic competence, for example is considered the primary task of the parents (Fisher, 2002), and gender roles in the Amish community are considered to be traditional. The man works, the woman raises the children. However, the Amish family is non-traditional in the way that the man has the absolute say in any matter. As in most families, gender roles in Amish marriages vary by personality; there are shades of dominance from husband to wife across a wide spectrum with many variations. In non-farm families, typically the husband is the primary breadwinner, but in cases where a wife owns a business, she may provide most of the family income.
In the beginning of the film, the family seems to have the ability to function in an ordinary middle-class society. Towards the climax, one notices that the family can not function because the mother is blind and still morning over her husbands death which allows her the excuse of not being a parental figure to her children. Gregror did everything for everyone, but nothing for himself. He didn’t enjoy life because he was too busy working at a job that he hated in order to pay off his parents debts and to take care of the household; while they did nothing to help or to show him any appreciation. This story also show how one can give their all and when they are in need of help those that he or she helped along the way will turn their backs with no regard to you. While I was reading, “Metamorphosis”, it made me view life in a different way, and made me come to a decision of taking time out for myself in order to enjoy every essence of being me, and not neglect myself.
In Chapter 4 the narrator describes how his life is before he and Rafa were sent to the campo. He lived with Rafa, his mother and grandfather. He and Rafa had a good relationship with their grandfather because if they ever got in trouble with their mother he would always go easy on them by not making them go through to punishment their mother gave them. During this chapter their mother is working long hours just to take care of her children. At one point she goes into a state of shock and depression because Yuniors father told her he was coming home to see them but he never showed up.

My friend who has never been on government assistance seems to be judgmental. They don’t understand why, “we go to work every day to support someone else’s kid”. They feel this way about all people on welfare that have more than one child, whether they work or not. In their opinion, people shouldn’t keep having kids if they can’t afford to take care of them on their own. My family member agrees with almost one hundred percent with my friend.
