“Let’s honor the conscious of those who disagree with abortion and draft a sensible conscious clause and make sure that all of our health care policies are grounded in clear ethics”. This speech was given by President Barrack Obama in regards to contraceptive coverage in the National Healthcare Act. However, there are various companies, schools, doctors and churches which are being asked to provide contraceptive coverage despite their religious beliefs and moral values. At the heart of this argument is the question, “Does the Federal government have the right to tell organizations, business leaders and medical professionals that they have to comply with this mandate or face fines and possible jail time”? The Traditional Values Coalition feels that the government is asking a business to contribute. While a business itself cannot physically be involved in moral or religious decisions, its founders and executives can be. The argument is not one of religion but on what constitutes the separation of a business from a person’s own beliefs. If you founded the company and built it from nothing does that mean you have the sole responsibility to decide what your company will or will not do based on how you think? This leads to another question, which is at what point does a company surpass its founders belief system? Is this determined by a dollar amount in sales or the number of employees? In one case, the Pro Life America group argued that the decision lies with woman to make based on her own feelings. They also stated that free birth control gives a woman personal choice on their own body and places them in charge. They then contradict themselves by further stating that free contraceptive coverage will allow women to assume a higher risk in sexual relationships. Basically, they state that it will reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies, but not reduce the number of women becoming sexually active. The Pro Choice group feels that, like Pro Life, the choice should belong to the woman.
